My dissertation entitled "Exploring Linked Data at Web Scale" is centred around systems that enable users to search and explore collaboratively-edited web datasets. Most of my dissertation-related research has been carried out in the context of the SWSE (Semantic Web Search Engine) project.
My general research interest is the Semantic Web, especially large-scale interoperation between information sources on the Web. Self-organisation in networks is on my list of things to explore, as are machine learning methods on graph-based data. I would like to think a bit more about semantics in the context of social systems. Recently, I have become interested in (RESTful) architectures for cyber-physical systems (e.g., smart energy grids, surgery systems, mixed-reality systems).
I work at Institute AIFB at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. I completed my PhD at the Digital Enterprise Research Institute at National University Ireland, Galway under the supervision of Stefan Decker. I received a Diplom (nearby equivalent of U.S.-style M.Sc.) in informatics from Fachhochschule Würzburg in Germany. I did internships at Fraunhofer Institute für Silicatforschung in Würzburg and at IBM's Silicon Valley Lab in San Jose, California. My Diplom thesis was carried out in collaboration with Centro Politécnico Superior at Universidad de Zaragoza, Spain. I worked as visiting research assistant at University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute in Marina del Rey, California.
I currently work on the European project PlanetData (large-scale data management) and the national project iZeus (smart energy grids). I am involved in the DFG SFB Cognition-Guided Surgery. I worked on the European project NeOn, DIP and TripCom and the national projects Lion/Lion2 (Ireland) and MEREGIOmobil (Germany).
